Residence permit of Uruguay

Uruguay is a small but stable and prosperous country in South America, located between Argentina and Brazil and bordered by the Atlantic Ocean. Despite its modest size, the country is known for its high standard of living, developed social infrastructure, and one of the most stable economies in the region, attracting expats and investors who value security and predictability. Uruguay is often called the "Switzerland of South America" due to its political stability, transparent banking system, and progressive legislation.

The residence permit application process is transparent and minimally bureaucratic, and the status itself provides access to one of the continent's most reliable banking systems, which is actively used for international asset management and capital protection. Family members can be included in the same application, receiving the same rights as the main applicant.

In addition to economic advantages, Uruguay offers a high quality of life, a mild climate, a developed healthcare system, and high-quality education. The country is renowned for its environmental policies, safety, and friendly atmosphere. A residence permit opens the way to permanent residency and, ultimately, Uruguayan citizenship, a passport which provides visa-free access to many countries worldwide. Uruguay is becoming a reliable and promising platform for personal and business life in the heart of South America.

Tax regime of Uruguay

Uruguay offers attractive tax conditions for foreign investors seeking tax residency. Law No. 20.446 provides an 11-year exemption from tax on income from foreign capital for those who meet one of three criteria:

  • staying in the country for more than 183 days per year;
  • owning real estate in Uruguay worth at least 2 million USD;
  • making annual investments of at least 100,000 USD in the Innovation Fund.

After the 11-year tax relief period, a 5-year transitional period applies with a tax rate of 6%. Upon completion of the transitional period, the standard IRPF rate of 12% applies to income from foreign capital.

This system makes Uruguay one of the most attractive jurisdictions in the region for long-term planning and capital protection.
