Those who possess passport or residence permit of Switzerland will be able to get an e-ID in 2026. This update was presented by the Federal Council, as the media of Switzerland reports.
Once gained E-ID, users will be enabled to self-identify in a digital way in a safe, fast and not difficult manner henceforth. Most importantly, this proposal takes into account all security and data privacy issues that everyone had been so concerned about.
Previously, when there was an initiative to launch a private e-ID, it was turned down. «No» votes were significantly caused by matters of security concerning information privacy, as stated.
Now that the scheme of e-ID is planned to make a start, the authorities highlighted that e-ID is given only by state and there is no interference of companies of private sector. Moreover, e-ID is to be kept only on a mobile phone that an individual uses.
The E-ID will be non-mandatory and costless. All services provided by the authorities will keep on being offered in a conventional pattern.
